How to Play

Play Space Words online for free. Space Words is an entertaining spelling game where children play a space ship which must avoid hitting the wrong letters and shoot asteroids which contain the correct letters in the word associated with a picture. This game is rendered in mobile-friendly HTML5, so it offers cross-device gameplay. You can play it on mobile devices like Apple iPhones, Google Android powered cell phones from manufactures like Samsung, tablets like the iPad or Kindle Fire, laptops, and Windows-powered desktop computers. All game files are stored locally in your web browser cache. This game works in Apple Safari, Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Opera and other modern web browsers.

Start the Game

Tap the screen or any key in the game area to load the welcome screen.
Then click on the start button to begin the game.
A button in the lower right corner brings up the options menu where you can turn sounds, music and speech synthesis on or off. It also allows you to clear high score data.
Game Controls
- The upper right corner of the game contains a pause button.
- Movement and shooting:
  - You can control the ships movement and shooting via touch using the on screen buttons at the bottom left and right respectively.
  - To shoot with your keyboard use any of these keys: Control, X or L.
  - You can move the ship around the screen using either the arrow keys or W, A, S and D.
  - Strategy
    - Letters
      - You have to enter the letters into the word in the correct order from left to right.
      - If you are on the first letter of a word and destroy an asteroid with the second letter you lose a life.
      - Dying
        You start the game with 10 spare ships.
        If you shoot and destroy the wrong asteroid you lose a ship.
        If you run into any asteroid you lose a ship.
        Destroying asteroids
        Asteroids require 5 shots to destroy.
        You can hold the shoot button in to automatically repeatedly shoot.
        If you accidentally shoot the wrong asteroid a few times it does not matter so long as you do not actually destroy it.
        If you run into an asteroid with the next letter in the word you do get the letter, but you lose a ship.
        General strategy
        The game is not timed, so if the wrong asteroid is moving faster than the correct asteroid and makes a particular shot hard it can make sense to wait until the letter comes by again.
        It generally makes sense to have your ship in the back third of the screen to give you greater time to react as new asteroids enter the screen.
        You score points for completed words, with longer words being worth more points.
